Sherab (20) set himself on fire in the main street of Cha Township in Ngaba County around 7:10 PM yesterday, according to exile monks Kanyak Tsering and Lobsang Yeshi.
“He died there and then,” the two monks citing sources in the troubled region said.
Local Tibetans and family members reportedly tried to take possession of the Sherab’s body but were prevented by armed police and security personnel who arrived at the scene and forcibly took away.
The sources said authorities imposed security clampdown in the town following the Sherab’s immolation that is among more than 30 Tibetans, mostly monks and nuns, who resorted to similar deadly protest against what they allege as “repressive policies implemented by China” and to call for the return of Dalai Lama to Tibet.
“Presently, there are around 300 Chinese government officials stationed at Kirti monastery, and throughout Ngaba County,” the sources quoted contacts in the region as saying.
