Wayne Rooney's injury has dominated today's headlines but do questions need to be asked about why United fell short last night?
Sir Alex Ferguson made his views pretty clear in the press conference and I dare say he did the same in the dressing room as well. United were poor and had it not been for that very early goal the whole performance would have been seen in a very different light. Because they led 1-0 for some time, it might have looked like a late collapse but really they were under quite a lot of pressure throughout and it was pressure that they were inviting on themselves, which is uncharacteristic given their form in Europe over the past few seasons.
What do you put United's poor display down to? Did they freeze, was it fatigue, or was it just a bad night?
Bayern are not in the same class as Barcelona, but in many ways last night reminded me of the Champions League final last May in that United got dominated in midfield. Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick, who are two excellent passers of the ball, seemed to be giving it away more than you would expect and just not retaining possession in the way they normally would. At one point United's pass completion percentage was down at around 54 per cent, which is considerably lower than you would expect from a team like United. For large parts of the match, United's defence seemed to keep them in the game along with Van der Sar, but the defending for Bayern's second goal was terrible. It was an erratic performance all round and not too many United players emerged with any credit.
This performance and Rooney's injury couldn't have come at a worse time, with two matches that will go a long way to defining their season to come in the next week.
We will know more later about Rooney's injury but there has to be a huge question mark over whether he plays against Chelsea on Saturday in the Barclays Premier League. I will be surprised if he does and they have then got another four days before the second leg against Bayern, but again I would think Rooney would be a doubt for that one as well. At least they can turn to Dimitar Berbatov - and it is hard to shed too many tears for a team that can turn to a £30.7 million player on the bench. When called upon, Berbatov has actually played well over the past few weeks, so while it is a blow it is perhaps not a cataclysmic blow for United.
Certainly going into these two games, against Chelsea and Bayern, they would want Rooney fit, available and firing on all cylinders.
United pride themselves on bouncing back from defeats like this. Do you expect a backlash against Chelsea on Saturday?
It is very rare for United to produce two, or even three, bad performances in a row. Normally they do bounce back - the famous United backlash. Sir Alex Ferguson will not be hoping, but expecting that to be the case on Saturday. Chelsea will not be scared of going to Old Trafford. They will have seen signs of vulnerability last night, but United can genuinely be at their most dangerous when they are wounded.
Bayern showed enough last night to hint that they could cause real problems at Old Trafford in the second leg. With Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger returning for that match are United still favourites to progress?
There has to be a real possibility that United will go out. There seemed to be this ludicrous assumption with Chelsea a couple of weeks ago that because the Premier League teams were so strong they would beat Inter in the second leg - as we know it didn't turn out that way. Having said that, United are perhaps slight favourites for the tie and that is only because we know from past experience that they can pull off these remarkable results. Their record at home in the Champions League is so good (one defeat in 26 matches) and they will think it is natural that they will overpower Bayern in the second leg. But after the Chelsea result that is a dangerous assumption. As I have mentioned many times this season, the gap between the English teams and the rest of Europe is not what it has been in the past three seasons.
We have talked in the past about a possible shift in the balance of power in European football. Did we see more evidence of that last night?
I have said in the past that English teams would not be as dominant in Europe this season as they have been. England provided three semi-finalists in the previous three seasons. This season we have had one team (Liverpool) go out in the group stages, a second (Chelsea) lose in the last-16 and one having lost the first leg of their quarter-final (United). And that is without any of them coming up against the best in Europe as Arsenal will do tonight. It is pretty blindingly obvious that the English domination of previous seasons just isn't there and if there was a huge gap before it has either gone all together or it is very small. I certainly wouldn't be tipping an English club to win the Champions League this season.
Any chance this result and Rooney's injury can knock United out of their stride this season?
It is only one game and United have looked pretty strong in recent weeks. I have always felt this is a good United team that achieves great results rather than a great United team. This may be the ultimate test for this United side. They have got two huge games coming up now and we might be turning round in a week saying this was the time that showed United's strengths or their weaknesses. Because it is seen as a defining period in their season, in some ways it is too early to judge them.
